Thanksgiving taste-test: Ultimate mashed potatoes

I'll be spending the next few weekends testing recipes for Thanksgiving dinner.

Ingredients
6 pounds Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and quartered
4 cloves garlic, peeled
1 cup half & half
12 tablespoons unsalted butter

Method
Put the prepared potatoes and garlic in a large pot filled with fresh cold water and bring to the boil. Turn the heat to a simmer and cook until the potatoes are tender, 20 minutes.

Drain in a colander and shake out the excess water. Add the half & half and butter to the pot and heat until melted together. Push the potatoes and garlic through a ricer into the pot and season with salt. Stir and cook over moderate heat until very hot. Garnish with freshly grated parmesan, fresh chopped parsley, or sweet paprika.

How about using sour cream instead of the half and half?

I love your recipes posted on Xanga. I will never cook rice the same way again after reading about the way to cook it here on another post on your blog. Awesome difference! Thank you!

I'm debating if I should cook this year... gonna be stuck in Illinois this year, can't go home. My coworker invited me to go have dinner with her in Peoria, but not really comfortable with that and I always cook thanksgiving, it'd be weird. May cook small just for me.. so I don't break Mom's tradition of cooking.

Not sure about the garlic.. and I had to google to see what half and half was! I guessed it was something to do with milk. I have always read that heating the milk before you pour it in is important.

Anyway, miss you! Hope you have been well!
